چکیده

Surface X-ray diffraction has been used to analyze in situ the room-temperature adsorption behaviour and the structure of K and Cs on Cu(OO1) at submonolayer coverages. Adsorption of K takes place in fourfold hollow sites up to coverages of about 0.25 monolayers (ML), where 1 ML corresponds to 1.53 X lOI atoms/cm2. At higher coverages the formation of a quasi-hexagonal incommensurate adlayer is observed. In contrast, for Cs adsorption we observe from the very beginning the formation of the quasi-hexagonal structure up to the completion of the adlaytr at about 0.30 ML. For K adsorption in the hollow sites we determine an adsorption height, d, = 2.25(H) A, corresponding to an effective K radius of reff = 1.6(l) w close to the ionic radius of 1.33 A. We do not observe a change in the effective radiu! as a function of coverage. For the quasi-hexagonal Cs strucJure we find an (average) adsorption height d I = 2.94 A corresponding to an effective radius of reff = 2.18 and 1.93 A, for the limiting cases of hollowand bridge-site adsorption, respectively. The analysis of the superlattice reflections corresponding to the quasi-hexagonal incommensurate structures indicated that the K adlayer is strongly modulated. The first Fourier component of the substrate-induced modulation was determined to uol = 1.29(3) A. In contrast, for Cs/Cu(OOl) static modulation is much less important (uol I 0.2 A>. Variation of the Cs adlayer density by changing the substrate temperature allows continuous expansion and contraction of the adsorbate unit cell. No commensurate-incommensurate transition has been observed.

A structural investigation of the interaction of oxalic acid with Cu(110)

The interaction of oxalic acid with the Cu(110) surface has been investigated by a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SXPS) , near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD), and density functional theory (DFT). O 1s SXPS and O K-edge NEXAFS...

Direct evidence for mesoscopic relaxations in cobalt nanoislands on Cu(001).

Surface x-ray diffraction in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy and molecular dynamics calculations provide first quantitative evidence for unusually large relaxations in nanometer-sized Co islands deposited on Cu(001) at 170 K. These lead to sharply reduced interatomic Co distances as low as 2.36 A as compared to bulk Co (2.51 A) involving low symmetry Co adsorption sites. Our resu...

Growth of epitaxial Cu on MgO(001) by magnetron sputter deposition

100-nm-thick Cu layers were grown on MgO(001) substrates by ultra-high vacuum magnetron sputter deposition at substrate temperatures Ts ranging from 40 to 300 °C. X-ray diffraction ω−2θ scans, ω-rocking curves, and pole figures show that layers grown at Ts=40 and 100 °C are complete single crystals with a cube-on-cube epitaxial relationship with the substrate: (001)Cu||(001)MgO with [100]Cu||[1...

Metal Adatom Induced Corrugation of Cu(001)

We report the discovery of a metal adatom induced corrugation of Cu(001) as probed by atom beam scattering (ABS). At Pb or Bi coverages of 0.05 (fraction of Cu layer), and while a (1×1) LEED pattern is still observed, the ABS diffraction pattern from uncovered Cu(001) areas has changed considerably from that of clean Cu(001). We show that these uncovered areas have become up to ten times more c...
